Facial recognition - how to hide with fashion

Facial recognition - how to hide with fashion

Not only are we asking how you can protect yourself from automatic facial recognition. The Center for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ZVKI) is also addressing this issue and recently posted some helpful tips. Besides the special makeup by Adam Harvey and everyday items like medical masks, URBAN PRIVACY was also mentioned.

Should you protect yourself from automatic facial recognition?

Often, the results of cameras have a high error rate. In 2017 and 2018, there was a test run at Berlin Südkreuz. According to research by the Chaos Computer Club, the best of the three tested camera systems had an accuracy rate of only 68.5%, far below the 80% claimed by the manufacturer.

And here lies the problem:

Due to the high error rate, people can be falsely suspected based on their appearance, which can lead to unjustified criminal prosecution. The discriminatory effects of automatic facial recognition are also significant. Women and People of Color are often recognized less reliably than white men.

What is the ZVKI?

The Center for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence deals not only with the impacts and questions surrounding artificial intelligence but also aims to promote the debate within civil society. The ZVKI is supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), the Think Tank iRights.Lab, the Fraunhofer Institutes AISEC and IAIS, and the Free University of Berlin.
